359,095. Ball-and-socket joints; motor vehicle steering gear. BAKER, E. K., 6225, Woodlawn Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. Aug. 11, 1930, No. 23997. [Class 79 (v).] A ball joint particularly for use in the steering linkwork of motor vehicles comprises a head 27 on one member 25 disposed within a recess 18 in a second member 15, wherein the head is mounted on a point bearing or pivot which is substantially at the centre of curvature of a hemispherical bearing surface 24 within the recess, antifriction elements being provided between the bearing surface and the part of the head opposed thereto. In the construction shown the point bearing is afforded by a ball-head 34 formed on a spring-loaded pin 33 which is supported by a plug 20 adjustably screwed into the member 15 and locked in any desired position by the end of a spring ring 21. Two rows of balls 32 run in grooves formed in the head 27. The joint may be used at any of the articulations of the steering gear shown in Fig. 1 in which a steering shaft 12 rotates the drop arm 11 through worm and sector gear 51, 50, the arm being connected to the stub axles through link-work 10, 9, 7, 8. |
