<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical element capable of displaying a spatial video and a two-dimensional video in an overlapped manner, and further to provide a video display device. <P>SOLUTION: An optical element of the present invention comprises: an imaging element for imaging an image positioned at a light incident surface side at a plane symmetric position with respect to a light emitting surface in a space at a light emitting surface side; and anisotropic diffusion members which diffuse light made incident to the light emitting surface with a predetermined angle and transmit light made incident thereto with an angle other than the predetermined angle. The imaging element images light obliquely made incident to an element surface at a plane symmetric position with respect to the element surface while causing light substantially vertically made incident to the element surface to travel straight.
