PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten a focusing time by improving the probability of moving a focus lens to the direction of the presence of a subject, when focus adjustment is performed by a contrast detection system.SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus includes: an imaging element (107); driving means (114 and 125) for driving the focus lens included in an imaging optical system; a contrast signal processing circuit (124) for performing focus detection on the basis of the contrast of an image signal outputted from the imaging element, while changing the position of the focus lens; a direction determination part (142) for determining the movement direction of the focus lens; and a storage part (141) for storing information having the probability of the presence of the subject for each distance from the imaging apparatus and the relation between the distance and the focus lens position. The direction determination part determines the movement direction of the focus lens when the focus detection is started as the direction where the probability of the presence of the subject is high on the basis of the position of the focus lens and the information stored in the storage part. |
