[Class 132 (iii).] A shuttlecock for the game of badminton &c. comprises a head, and a vane consisting of a coneshaped member of seamless tubular textile fabric secured to the head. The vane 1, Fig. 4, is made by drawing a seamless tube of knitted fabric over a duralumin form 8, Fig. 1, securing it by a rubber band 2 and a cord 3, dipping it repeatedly but to successively smaller depths in a stiffening material (e.g. plasticized glue or pyroxylin with an admixture of sulphide or oxide of zinc or oxide of titanium) so that the smaller end of the vane receives the heavier coating, cutting off the vane to the requisite length, removing from the form and mounting on the head 5. In drawing the fabric tube on to the form, the vane is given a greater density of texture, that is, with smaller interstices, near the smaller end than towards the larger end. When the vane and cone are dipped into a quick-drying solution the increased thickness at the small end of the vane is obtained at a single dipping by a gradual withdrawal, at decreasing speed, from the solution. When a glue compound is used, the vane may be rendered waterproof, after coating, by treatment with formaldehyde. The cone 8 may be lubricated with paraffin or soap to facilitate removal of the vane. The stiffened cone, after removal from the form 8, may be placed in a heated mould and given a fluted edge d, Fig. 5. The flutes may be formed with unequal sides to produce a spinning motion of the shuttlecock in flight. The head 5 is preferably formed of cork and is provided with a covering of colloidal composition, such as rubber, plasticized glue or plasticized pyroxylin with an admixture of white pigment. The colloidal cover may be reinforced by an admixture of silk fibre, paper pulp, felted hair, or by a knitted fabric. The vane is glued or cemented to the head and the usual band 4 is added. |
