PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method to apply prestress to a building for enabling the same to resist an earthquake having intensity up to 7, in a case of a massive earthquake with the intensity unanticipated in design, in a manner that enhances aseismic performance of the building with strength thereof reinforced by the applied prestress.SOLUTION: In a method to apply prestress to a multistory building 1, comprising foundations 2, columns 5 and beams 8, after the same is constructed, sheaths 6 where tendons are inserted therein are preliminarily embedded at predetermined locations on the foundations 2 and the columns 5 and the beams 8 on every story up to a top story. Then, tendons 9 are inserted into the sheaths and fixed to the building 1 with tension applied thereto. Thus, aseismic performance of the entire building 1 designed on the basis of a conventional seismic condition can be significantly improved with the prestress applied to the predetermined locations from the foundations 2 to the columns 5 and the beams 8 in the building 1. Permanent loading and seismic loading of a small or medium-sized earthquake can be resisted by structural resistance on the basis of conventional design of the building 1. The seismic loading of a massive earthquake having intensity up to level 7 which is unanticipated in the conventional design can be resisted with the structural resistance reinforced by the applied prestress. |
