This surface coating cutting tool has a lower layer and an upper layer which are coated onto surfaces of a tool base, wherein at least one layer of the lower layer comprises a TiCN layer, and the upper layer comprises an Al2O3 layer having average layer thickness of 2-15 μm, and having an α-type crystalline structure in the chemical vapor-deposited state. In the coincidence boundary distribution graph, the highest peak is present within the range of from Σ3 to Σ29; the Σ3 distribution proportion constitutes 35-70% of total length of the Σ3 and higher coincidence boundaries; and the Σ31 and higher coincidence boundaries constitute 25-60% of the total length of the Σ3 and higher coincidence boundaries. |
