Disclosed are a method for communication in a heterogeneous network and a small base station. The method comprises: determining, by a first small base station, a target communication mode of a target link from a plurality of candidate communication modes supported by the first small base station on the target link, wherein the target link comprises at least one of the following links: an access link and a backhaul link; and if the target communication mode of the target link is different from a current communication mode of the first small base station on the target link, changing, by the first small base station, the communication mode used on the target link into the target communication mode, and conducting communication on the target link using the target communication mode. By means of the method for conducting communication in a heterogeneous network and the small base station disclosed in the present invention, the target communication mode used by the small base station on the target link conforms to a current network state better, thereby improving the overall performance of the system and improving the user experience. |
