PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide novel arginase activity inhibitors useful in treatment of diseases and disorders characterized either by abnormally high arginase activity in a tissue of a mammal or by abnormally low nitric oxide synthase activity in a tissue of a mammal.SOLUTION: The present invention is directed to arginase inhibitor compounds comprising α,α-disubstituted α-amino carboxylic acid compounds represented by formula 1a, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, compositions containing these compounds, and the use of the compounds for the treatment and diagnosis of conditions characterized by upregulation of arginase, abnormally high arginase activity, or abnormally low nitric oxide synthase activity.
