A surgical suturing instrument (100), containing: a handle assembly (110); an elongate member (120) extending distally from the handle assembly and defining a longitudinal axis (y) and a distal end (122); an end effector (140) attached to the distal end of the elongate member, the end effector having a retainer jaw (150) and a suture jaw (160); an actuation mechanism (114) operatively connected through the elongate member to the end effector; wherein the retainer jaw includes a replaceable retainer cartridge (151) containing one or more rows of removably secured retainers (30, 230) each retainer having at least one aperture configured to receive a suture in a first direction and inhibit the removal of the suture in a second direction, and the suture jaw includes a replaceable suture cartridge (161) containing one or more rows of removably secured sutures (210); characterized in that the suture cartridge contains a plurality of linear rows of needles (220) and complimentary needle openings (164). |
