摘要 371,971. Typewriters &c. BRITISH TABULATING MACHINE CO., Ltd., Victoria House, Vernon Place, Southampton Row, London.-(Assignees of Ford, E. A.; Scarsdale, New York, U.S.A.) Feb. 5, 1931, No. 3738. Convention date, Feb. 6, 1930. [Class 100 (iv).] Record-controlled pneumatic driving-mechanism ; type-wheel machines hammer-impression arrangements.-In a machine operating under control of record cards to print thereon the data represented by the hole positions, a series of type-members are set by means of pneumatically operated selecting-devices communicating with ducts which convey air under pressure and are opened and closed by the record cards. In the machine shown in Fig. 3, type-wheels 49, frictionally mounted on a rockshaft 33, co-operate with selecting-devices consisting of stop-levers 45 having heads 46 arranged over ducts 44 in a bar 43. The ducts 44 communicate with ducts 40 in a spring- supported bar 39 which is mounted in a pressure chamber 38 in communication with a pump. The shaft 33 is rocked by means of a sector operated by a cam on a shaft 17 geared to the main shaft of the machine. The type-wheels and friction-springs abutting thereon are arranged between washers 54 on the shaft 33. The shaft is formed with longitudinal and circumferential grooves 51, 50, and the washers are passed along the shaft and turned until projections in the washers are out of register with the longitudinal grooves, a rod being then passed through the washers to key them to the shaft. Normally, projections 58 on the typewheels engage a stop-bar 59, and projections 56 on the washers engage pins 57 on the typewheels. The heads 46 of the stop-levers fit between projections 47, and are formed with recesses to prevent production of air-pockets when the ducts are under pressure. The cards 22 are discharged from a magazine A by means of a picker, and are fed between the duct-bars 39, 43 by means of pairs 23, 33, and 67, 71 of feed-rollers geared to the main shaft, the roller 67 having a gap 68 for arresting the card when the leading edge is at the printing line, and the trailing edge is between the duct-bars. The leading edge is supported by a flexible platen 74 arranged over a hammer 75 carried by a camoperated lever 76. When the holes in the card - pass the ducts, the stop-levers are rocked into the paths of the types, and the type-wheels are arrested when the types representing the hole positions are at the printing line. When the card is arrested it is held by air pressure, and the hammer prints the data on the leading edge. An ink ribbon 73 is arranged between the type-wheels and card. The stop-levers are returned by means of a reciprocating bar 60. The card is discharged by means of a pair 23a, 23a of feed-rollers geared to the main shaft. The shafts of the upper feed-rollers have sliding bearings engaging hooks 131 which abut on adjustable springs 135. The duct-bar 43 and the pivot 48 of the stop-levers are mounted in a support 118 which is pivoted on the shaft 33 and can be lifted, to afford access to the card, by means of a handle 123 on a plate 122 which is secured to a rock-shaft 119 on the support and has a lip for clamping the stop-levers. The rock-shaft has flats which normally engage keyhole slots in the framework and lock the support. The start and stop keys 96, 97, Fig. 10, are associated with means for stopping the machine when the supply of cards is exhausted. The keys are secured to a shaft 98 connected to a link 101 having a hook 105 engaging a latch 106 for a block 107 carried by a spring 117. Levers 110 in the path of the cards are-connected by a bail 111 and link 113 to a bell crank 115 carrying the spring 117. On depression of the start-key, the latch is released and an arm 99 on the shaft 98 displaces the block 107 and thereby moves a contact spring 108 into engagement with a contact spring 104 to start the motor. When cards are present, one of the levers 110 holds the block, and the contact springs remain closed when the start-key is released. If however there are no cards in the machine, release of the startkey permits the contact spring 108 to return and stop the motor. On depression of the stopkey, the link 101 is raised and the contact springs are separated. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The ribbon 73 is wound on spools provided with automatic feedreversal mechanism. Spring-urged discs splined on the spool-shafts engage brake-discs having arms connected by a spring, and projections abutting on stops.
