In a wind turbine generator or other power generating apparatus of a renewable energy type, a hydraulic pump is driven by a rotor through a drive shaft. The hydraulic pump has electronically controlled low pressure valves and primary high pressure valves which are check valves that cannot open against a pressure differential. The hydraulic pump further includes auxiliary high pressure valves which can be used in alternative motoring mode, to slowly rotate the drive shaft and rotor in the opposite direction to during normal pumping in a cycle in which low pressure valves are selectively closed at around top dead centre and the high pressure valves are opened where required to drive rotation. Thus a motoring facility can be provided, for example to enable the blade of a wind turbine generator to be positioned as required for maintenance, without compromising the efficiency or long term reliability of the pump. |
