<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting device which is further downsized and which can be stably and reliably mounted on a mounting board. <P>SOLUTION: The light-emitting device comprises: a substrate 1 including a dent part 13 formed on a top face, at least a pair of lateral faces 1c, 1e facing each other, a recess 16 formed on a rear face and reaching one of the lateral faces 1c, 1e between the opposed pair of lateral faces, and a through hole 15 penetrating from the inside of the dent part 13 to the inside of the recess 16; and a semiconductor light-emitting element 2. The pair of lateral faces 1c, 1e of the substrate 1 respectively include vertical parts 1cs, 1es on the rear face side and tapered parts 1ct, 1et on the top face side. Upper ends of the vertical parts 1cs, 1es are arranged closer to the top face side than a bottom face of the dent part 13.
