[Class 53.] Electrodes for alkaline accumulators consist of porous iron which is first formed by oxidation and reduction in an electrolytic bath and is then impregnated with a compound of cadmium such as the chloride or nitrate which is converted into the hydroxide by precipitation with alkali. Mercury may also be introduced by dissolving mercury chloride in the solution of cadmium with which the porous iron is impregnated, or a solution of a mercury salt in water may be first introduced into the iron. Mercury may also be introduced before the forming process by means of an alcoholic solution of mercury salts. Parts of the electrode may be protected from electrolytic action by the process described in Specification 361,164. In an example, a porous plate made by sintering iron powder obtained from iron carbonyl is impregnated with a solution of mercury chloride in alcohol. The plate is then treated with caustic potash solution and then electrolytically formed in a similar solution. It is then washed in water while in the discharged state and impregnated with a solution of cadmium nitrate and finally treated again with caustic potash solution. |
