A hybrid assembly for a vehicle is provided having a single input and a single output. The hybrid assembly is compactly packaged and achieves a wide range of gear ratios. The hybrid assembly may be used in a vehicle power train with or without an additional transmission.

a compound planetary gear set, including:
a first plurality of planet gears;a second plurality of planet gears; anda ring gear;a first electric machine having a first electric machine rotor integrally forming and acting as a sun gear of said compound planetary gear set;a second electric machine having a second electric machine rotor integrally forming and acting as a carrier of the compound planetary gear set and rotatably supporting the first and second plurality of planet gears;an output shaft directly coupled to the carrier of the compound planetary gear set;a first clutch configured to selectively directly couple the carrier to the ring gear thereby locking said compound planetary gear set; anda second clutch configured to selectively directly couple the sun gear to a housing of the hybrid assembly thereby preventing both the second electric machine and the sun gear of the compound planetary gear set from rotating.
