A radiation tolerant camera, including a camera module and having an electronic image sensor. The camera module is arranged in a radiation shielding enclosure, the enclosure having an opening for allowing passage of light into the image sensor. Furthermore, the camera module is connected to a heat absorbing cooling element dissipating heat from the camera module.

1. A method for operating a radiation tolerant camera for monitoring purposes in environments with strong ionizing radiation,
wherein said camera comprises an electronic image sensor; a neutron radiation shielding enclosure which encloses the electronic image sensor and which is provided with an opening allowing passage of light into the image sensor; and a neutron radiation shield, wherein said camera is mounted on a motorized support which allows rotation about a first rotational axis to provide a view of the environment without hindrance by the radiation shield and rotation about a second axis disposed transversely to the first axis, said method comprising: pivoting the enclosure by means of said motorized support around the second axis in relation to the neutron radiation shield between a shielded resting position, in which the opening of the enclosure is directed towards the neutron radiation shield, to an operating position in which the opening is uncovered by the neutron radiation shield.
