Disclosed are a method for defining at least a part of peripheral regions of a portable device as an input region and controlling the portable device by receiving a user input inputted into the input region and the portable device to which the method is applied. According to one aspect of the present invention, the portable device includes: a sensing unit which senses a user input in an on-body input region, which is at least a part of the peripheral regions of the portable device, through at least one sensor; a recognition unit which recognizes a user gesture corresponding to the user input; and an output unit which outputs a control command for the portable device corresponding to the user gesture.
