A transceiver configured to operate in each of a first mode and a second mode, the transceiver comprising: a transmit section configured to i) operate in each of the first mode and the second mode, and ii) transmit frames of data while operating in each of the first mode and the second mode; and a frame formatter configured to (i) operate in each of the first mode and the second mode and (ii) determine which of the first mode and the second mode the transceiver is operating in, wherein, in response to a determination that the transceiver is operating in the first mode, i) the frame formatter is configured to generate a first frame of data in a first format, andii) the transmit section is configured to transmit a single set of long training symbols prior to transmitting the first frame of data, and in response to a determination that the transceiver is operating in the second mode, i) the frame formatter is configured to generate a second frame of data in a second format, andii) the transmit section is configured to transmit a plurality of sets of long training symbols prior to transmitting the second frame of data, and wherein the transmit section is configured to, while operating in each of the first mode and the second mode, transmit a plurality of tones of a short training symbol of a corresponding one of the first frame of data and the second frame of data using different respective antennas.
