PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique of producing reduced iron which is based on heating an iron oxide-containing material and a carbonaceous reductant and allows improvement of productivity of reduced iron not only when an iron oxide-containing material high in iron quality is used but also when an iron oxide-containing material low in iron quality is used.SOLUTION: A method of producing reduced iron includes a step of agglomerating a mixture of an iron oxide-containing material and a carbonaceous reductant and a step of reducing iron oxide contained in the obtained agglomerate by heating the agglomerate, and the agglomerate has an X value of 0.5-6.0, calculated by equation (1) on the basis of the total amount of CaO, the total amount of SiOand the amount of quartz in the agglomerate. Equation (1): X=(total CaO)/[(total SiO)-(quartz)], where ( ) shows contents (mass%) of the individual ingredients in the agglomerate. |
