PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet material discrimination device and an image forming apparatus capable of regulating a sheet material information detection start timing by sheet material information detection means while promoting lower cost.SOLUTION: A sheet material discrimination device 100 includes: information detection means 110 for detecting information of a sheet material P; discrimination means 600 for discriminating a sheet material on the basis of the information of the sheet material that is detected by the information detection means; and sheet material presence detection means for sensing presence of the sheet material at a predetermined position in the device. At a predetermined timing after presence of the sheet material is detected by the sheet material presence detection means, detection of the sheet material information by the information detection means is started. The information detection means is also used as the sheet material presence detection means. |
