The invention provides polythiophene copolymers comprising monomeric units of a 3-alkylthienyl and an unsubstituted thienyl, wherein a film of the copolymer has a saturated mobility value, or a linear mobility value, or both, of at least about 10-3 cm2/V-sec. Methods of preparation of the copolymers, which have improved FET mobility properties, are also provided. Polythiophenes of the invention can be useful in plastic electronics, photovoltaics, and OLEDs. A photovoltaic cell prepared using a copolymer of the invention with PC70BM was found to have a fill factor of 66%. The improved FET mobility properties of the polythiophenes offer advantages for uses wherein polythiophenes act as conductors or semiconductors. |
