This irregularity detection method is used in an in-vehicle network system that is provided with a plurality of electronic control units that communicate via a bus in accordance with the CAN protocol. The irregularity detection method comprises: a reception step in which a data frame that is transmitted over the bus is received; and a verification step in which a specific identifier within the data frame is verified when a data frame that does not conform to a predetermined rule related to a transmission cycle is received at the reception step.
