PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide new means for achieving improvement in dispersibility of ferromagnetic powder and improvement in durability of a magnetic layer in a magnetic recording medium.SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium has a magnetic layer including ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a nonmagnetic substrate and further including a compound represented by the following general formula (1) and having a weight average molecular weight of 1,000 or more and less than 20,000.
