摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress a variation in the luminous power of a light source without incurring a rise in costs or a reduction in detection accuracy in the light-emitting state of the light source, as well as an increase in device size or a decline in the brightness of a projected image.SOLUTION: An image projection device has: light modulation elements 4R, 4G, 4B; a projection optical system 15 for projecting the light modulated by the light modulation elements; an illumination optical system 13 for illuminating the light modulation elements separately in a discretionary number of divided illumination areas; light source units 5a, 5b, 5c corresponding in number to the divided illumination areas; and light source control means 17 for controlling the light source units. Brightness in the divided illumination areas can be differentiated independently for each of the divided illumination areas by having the luminous power of the light source units changed by the light source control means. The device further has light detection means 12 for detecting a non-projected light component that is not projected by the projection optical system, and the light source control means controls the luminous power of the light source units in accordance with the result of detection of the non-projected light component by the light detection means.
