PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition having a sufficiently low solid phase-nematic phase transition temperature (T), a sufficiently low viscosity (&eegr;), a sufficiently low rotational viscosity (γ1), a large elastic constant (K), and a large absolute value of negative dielectric anisotropy (&Dgr;&egr;) without decreasing a refractive index anisotropy (&Dgr;n) and a nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T), and to provide a VA-type or another liquid-crystal display element using the above liquid-crystal composition, which has no or few display defects and has excellent display quality and a high response speed.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal composition contains one or more compounds having an alkenyl side chain, in which the total content of the compounds having an alkenyl side chain in the liquid-crystal composition is 5 to 100 mass%. A liquid crystal display element using the liquid crystal composition is also disclosed. |
