Improvements in or relating to apparatus for treating artificial threads, filaments and the like

The apparatus for the manufacture of artificial silk &c. of Specification 378,467, is modified more particularly when used for the manufacture of cuprammonia silk, by the provision of an acid drip 27 adjacent to the receiving end of the rotating cage A in order to prevent the deposition of copper on the threads and on the cage. Acid is also supplied through a pipe 24 at a later part of the cage, and water by a pipe 25. The acid drip pipe 27 is preferably reciprocated, relatively to the axis of the cage, by mounting the pipe on an arm 28 carried by a shaft 29; the shaft is oscillated by means of a link 31 connected by gearing to the main drive shaft 15. The apparatus of the earlier Specification is also modified by the interposition of a drawing wheel 21 on an extension of the main drive shaft 9 of the cage, and around which the thread proceeding from the spinning nozzle is led a number of turns as by a guide 22; the diameter of the wheel is less than that of the cage in order that during its passage to the latter the thread may be stretched. The pump 16 supplying solution to the spinning nozzle, is driven from the cage shaft 9 which is itself driven by belt gearing 12 from a shaft 14, the latter being adapted to be raised by means of an hinged arm 33 when it is desired to stop any particular unit, as for the purpose of altering the gear ratio of the pump-driving gear 17 in order to change the denier of the thread. In order to assist in the treatment of all parts of the thread, the latter is laid on the cage with a traversing motion by means of a reciprocating guide 23 connected by an extension to an arm on the oscillating shaft 29. The thread is finally dried by the passage of hot air radially outwards through the cage, the air being supplied through a goose neck 37, which forms the support for the further end of the cage, and is heated by a steam coil 34. It is convenient to reduce the diameter of the cage at this point in order to permit shrinkage of the thread during drying.
