<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can be configured with a low overall height. <P>SOLUTION: A multifunction image reader 10 comprises a contact glass 20 on which a manuscript is mounted, and a CIS unit 38 which reads an image from the manuscript by reciprocating on the underside of the contact glass 20. The CIS unit 38 is configured by mounting an image sensor 52 on a carriage 39 supported by a rail 27 of a scanner base 23. Two coil springs 57, 58 are interposed between the carriage 39 and the image sensor 52. The image sensor 52 is in pressure contact with the contact glass 20, and the coil springs 57, 58 are disposed closer to one end side than a center 61 of the image sensor 52 in the longitudinal direction. Spring constant of the coil spring 57 disposed at a position close to the center 61 is larger than that of the coil spring 58.
