<p>An apparatus 10 for testing the hardness of a material comprises a sample support 11, an indenter 12 mounted on an indenter support 14 which is movable in a first manner to bring the indenter into and out of an active position and in a second manner to press the indenter into a sample of material mounted on the support, an imaging apparatus 16 on an optics support 18 mounted on an apparatus frame 20 and being movable in a third manner to bring the imaging apparatus into an active position in which it may be used to view an indentation made by pressing the indenter into a sample mounted on the support, characterised in that the indenter support 14 is supported in the apparatus frame via a loading mechanism 21 operable to move the indenter support in the second manner.</p> |
