<p>An axial flux electrical machine comprises a rotor shaft 13 extending through the stator assembly 20 carrying a permanent magnet rotor 22 , the rotor being arranged to the side of the stator assembly facing an end cover 213. The stator housing 201 has first and second end covers 203,213 defining a substantially cylindrical aperture that extends between the end covers, a stator windings 211 and the associated pole pieces 210 being located in the aperture. The poles 210 are secured to the cover 213 for assembly with the windings and a yoke element 203 is held in contact with the pole pieces by end cover 203. The first and second covers defining respective apertures through which the shaft extends and a bearing housing 205 located in the aperture supports the shaft solely on the internal bearings (226,236 Fig 9) located in the assembly. Coolant may be circulated within the stator and external fins may be present. Resin, gel or phase-change material may fill and spare stator space. Sensors/ processor are located in the machine. A back iron 221 or yoke members of a powdered iron, grain oriented laminations or a combination thereof mount the rotor.</p> |
