Ores such as beryl or zircon are mixed with an alkali or alkaline-earth metal fluoride and the mixture reacted with silicon tetrafluoride at say 600-700 DEG C. to form double fluorides of beryllium or zirconium with the alkali or alkaline-earth metal, which may be leached out and treated with alkali to precipitate the metal hydroxide. The residual solution of alkali &c. fluoride after evaporation may be divided, a part being used to mix with a fresh batch of ore, and the remainder being reacted with the siliceous residue from leaching out the double fluoride to reproduce silicon tetrafluoride by known methods. The process may be applied to any oxide or silicate ore, the metal constituent of which will form a double fluoride with an alkali or alkaline-earth metal.
|
