[Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Shells are supported internally, during banding in a press, by an expanding mandrel. A cylinder a let in the press table b is closed by a screw connection a<SP>1</SP> with the base of the mandrel c which has a number of slots cut from the upper end of a lamination near the base.to permit the required expansion. It is coned internally at c<SP>4</SP> to engage an expanding member g carried by or integral with the piston #<SP>1</SP>. A spring j ensures the return of the parts when the cylinder is open to exhaust. The nose of the mandrel is tapered to facilitate the applicatibn of the shell and may be fitted with a nipple m, Fig. 3, through which the working parts are lubricated. The shell rests on a renewable washer c'. |
