The invention concerns a system for the post-treatment of exhaust gases intended to be fitted to an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine equipping a motor vehicle. According to the invention, the system comprises: a main catalytic device (9) for converting pollutants emitted by the engine following the combustion of an air/fuel mixture near stoichiometry, an additional catalytic device (11) for converting unburnt hydrocarbons following the combustion of an air/fuel mixture enriched with fuel, and a unit for managing the temperature of the additional device (11) on the basis of the ageing status thereof, increasing the temperature of this additional device to a temperature equal to or greater than an optimum efficiency temperature that is a function of the ageing status thereof.
