An improved method for producing olefins by alkanol dehydration, wherein the improved method comprises decreasing acetaldehyde byproduct by using a catalytic composition consisting of an admixture of an alumina dehydration catalyst and yttrium oxide present in an amount within a range of from 5 percent by weight to 50 percent by weight based upon a total catalytic composition weight, wherein the alkanol is ethanol, whereby the acetaldehyde byproduct is decreased relative to the same olefins produced from the same alkanol at the same temperature although using the same alumina dehydration catalyst in an absence of the yttrium oxide.
