The present invention relates to an apparatus for recognizing an object and a method thereof. The apparatus of the present invention performs an image preprocessing step to individually detect the horizon and the object in a photographed image, detects the horizon and at least one object from an image in which the image preprocessing step is performed, selects at least effective object from the object with respect to the detected horizon, and matches the selected effective object with automatic identification system (AIS) data including location information of pre-stored vessels to extract a final object. According to the present invention, the photographed image and the AIS data are matched to enable objects such as a buoy and the like to be high-precisely selected, so a user can easily confirm whether the objects exist or not. Also, the image matched with the AIS data is provided to the user, so stable navigation can be provided even under a near miss situation, and severe weather due to unstable atmosphere such as fog. |
