<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for detecting slab width that can accurately detect the width of slabs in a heating furnace, and a control device for slab arrangement in the heating furnace using the width of the slabs detected by the device and method. <P>SOLUTION: A slab width grasp value LD which is the width of the slab before charged into the heating furnace is detected by a slab loader 13 used in conveying the slab 30 to the inlet side of the heating furnace 2. A slab width measured value WA which is the width of the slab after extracted from the heating furnace is measured by a slab width meter 14 installed to detect the width of the slab immediately after extracted from the heating furnace 2. At this time, a deviation between the slab width grasp value LD and the width measured value WA is computed on the same slab, and the deviation is learned. Based on the leaned result, the slab width grasp value LD is corrected to detect the slab width SW in the heating furnace.
