The invention relates to purinergic (P2X) receptors, more specifically to P2X7 receptors, the generation of antibodies and the use of antibodies and immunogens that are capable of selectively binding to a non ATP-binding P2X7 receptor but not to an ATP-binding P2X7 receptor, for the detection and treatment of disease conditions, especially cancer.

A peptide consisting of the sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 3 or consisting of a sequence within the sequence shown in SEQ ID NO: 3, said peptide being useful as an immunogen to generate an antibody that is capable of selectively binding to a non ATP-binding P2X7 receptor but not to an ATP-binding P2X7 receptor, wherein the peptide includes the sequence shown in SEQ ID NO:2, wherein the peptide is linked to a heterologous carrier for assisting with generating the antibody.
