PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the surface swelling of a moving handrail even if generated at any kind of place of a tensile body, and thereby reliably detect a swelling state on a surface of the moving handrail.SOLUTION: A detection device for surface swelling of a moving handrail includes two or more switches 5 disposed in the surface side of the moving handrail 1 of a passenger conveyor, and a plate 12 placing each switch 5. The switch 5 is pushed and operated by the swelling when the swelling is generated in the surface of the moving handrail 1. The switch 5 is disposed side by side in the width direction of the moving handrail 1. An installation width (B) in the width direction of those entire switches is wider than the width of a tensile body 3 provided inside of the moving handrail 1. The plate 12 is configured such that a height of a mounting surface of each switch 5 is adjusted in conformity to a curved surface shape on the surface of the moving handrail 1 so as to equalize a distance between each switch 5 and the surface of the moving handrail.
