PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas treatment apparatus and method which preferably adsorb and remove mercury and minimize an amount of use of impregnated activated carbon by using normal activated carbon and the impregnated activated carbon in combination.SOLUTION: The exhaust gas treatment apparatus includes a bag filter device 4 which removes dust from exhaust gas from a furnace 1 and an activated carbon feeding device 3 which blows activated carbon into an exhaust gas flow channel provided for guiding exhaust gas to the bag filter 4 from the furnace 1. The activated carbon feeding device 3 includes a normal activated carbon feeding device 3A for feeding normal activated carbon without impregnation material and an impregnated activated carbon feeding device 3B for feeding the impregnated activated carbon in which the impregnation material is impregnated. The exhaust gas treatment apparatus further includes on the outlet side of the bag filter device, a mercury concentration meter 5 for measuring mercury concentration in exhaust gas and includes a control device 7 which controls each of the normal activated carbon feeding device 3A and the impregnated activated carbon feeding device 3B so that the mercury concentration in the exhaust gas becomes a preset value or less based on the measured value by means of the mercury concentration meter 5.
