According to the present invention, an electronic toll collection apparatus using a passive type RFID tag and a control method thereof. The control method of an electronic toll collection apparatus using a passive type RFID tag according to the present invention includes the steps of: having a lane control part receive vehicle sensing information and a recognized vehicle plate number from a vehicle type classification device and a vehicle plate number recognition part; having the lane control part search a recognition tag in a tag DB on the basis of the recognized tag if the RFID tag attached to a vehicle is recognized from the RFID tag recognition part; having the lane control part determine whether the recognized vehicle plate number and the type of the sensed vehicle are matched with the tag information of the tag DB on the basis of the recognized tag, in the case that the recognized tag is searched from the tag DB, and then confirms a toll fee and outputs the confirmed toll fee; and having the lane control part transmit a result of processed toll fee charging to an upper server.
