Overload Control in a Communication Network

Disclosed are methods as well radio network nodes and user equipments (UE) that are suitable for overload control in a communication network. A radio network node may, upon receiving a random access preamble from an UE, determine whether there exists an overload condition. In response to a determination that an overload condition exists, the radio network node may configure a MAC PDU220 to accompany a E/T/RAPID subheader 212 with a request to extend the time period during which the UE waits for reception of a MAC RAR response.

1. A method performed by a radio network node for overload control in a communication network, the method comprising:
receiving a random access preamble from a user equipment, UE; determining whether an overload condition exists; and in response to determining that an overload condition exists configuring a Medium Access Control, MAC, Protocol Data Unit, PDU, to accompany a Random Access Preamble Identifier, RAPID, subheader with a request to extend the time period during which the UE waits for reception of a MAC Random Access Response, RAR; and transmitting the RAPID subheader and the accompanying request to the UE.
