The invention relates to a coating device (10) and to a method for coating a workpiece surface (16) of a workpiece (17). The coating device (10) has a coating tool (11). At least one wire (18, 19) is fed from a store (20, 21) to said coating tool (11). At least one wire-advancing apparatus (26), which is associated with each fed wire (18, 19), is used for this purpose. The coating device (10) also has a cutting apparatus (40), by means of which the at least one wire (18, 19) can be cut through between the store (20, 21) and the coating tool (11). The coating tool (11) melts the at least one wire (18, 19) by means of a heating element (34) and sprays the wire material particles, by means of a carrier gas flow, from a spray opening (15) onto the workpiece surface (16) to be coated. Before the start of a coating operation, it is determined, by means of a wire-amount sensing means (85), whether the wire amount available in the at least one store (20, 21) is sufficient for completely performing the impending coating operation. If this is not the case, an empty state (L) is detected and the at least one wire (18, 19) is removed. For this purpose, the at least one wire (18, 19) is cut by the cutting apparatus (40) and conveyed out of the spray opening (15). Then the at least one store (20, 21) can be exchanged. |
