PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a card reader for processing an approximately rectangular-shape IC card compliant with International Standards by taking in the card in a transverse direction, the card reader that can appropriately discriminate whether the card is inserted into an insertion port in a correct orientation.SOLUTION: A card reader comprises: a metal detection mechanism 10 for detecting an external connection terminal 2c to be formed in a front surface of a card 2; and a tip detection mechanism 11 for detecting a tip of the card 2. A control unit of the card reader is configured to: acquire a metal detection signal value based on an output signal of the metal detection mechanism 10 in a prescribed cycle within at least one part of a time during the time period until the tip of the card 2 is detected by the tip detection mechanism 11; calculate an integrated value integrating at least one part of a plurality of acquired metal detection signal values; and discriminate whether a legitimate card 2 is inserted into an insertion port 3 in a correct orientation on the basis of the integrated value. |
