PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process of producing an epoxide or epichlorohydrin from a multihydroxylated-aliphatic hydrocarbon and/or an ester thereof.SOLUTION: In the process, using a catalyst applicable under superatmospheric, atmospheric and subatmospheric pressure conditions with improved results, a multihydroxylated-aliphatic hydrocarbon and/or an ester thereof is contacted with a source of a superatmospheric partial pressure of hydrogen chloride for a sufficient time and at a sufficient temperature, without substantial removal of water, to produce a chlorohydrin; and then the chlorohydrin is contacted with a base to produce an epoxide in a high yield.
