<p>A composition for refining iron or steel comprises an intimate mixture of alkali metal chlorate, preferably potassium chlorate, manganese dioxide and a concentrated scavenging agent which comprises alkali metal fluoride, borax, or sodium carbonate or a mixture of any two of these. In an example, the composition comprises 12-20 parts by weight of potassium chlorate, 2-16 of borax and/or boracic acid, 2-8 of sodium fluoride and/or soda ash and 1-4 of manganese dioxide.</p> |
