A master cylinder for a vehicle has: a piston (77) driven forward by the operation of an operating element (23); and a cylinder (37) having the piston (77) provided therein in a movable manner. The cylinder (37) is provided with a movement restriction member (30) inserted through a radial hole (58) formed in the cylinder (37), the movement restriction member (30) restricting the movement of the piston (77) relative to the cylinder (37). The movement restriction member (30) affixes a detection member (29) to the cylinder (37), the detection member (29) detecting the operation of the operating element (23).
