An air inlet system for an internal combustion engine comprising an inlet duct 48, having a downstream end for connection to an air flow control component, for example a turbocharger 40, throttle or inlet manifold, and a mass air flow sensor assembly located closer to the downstream end than an upstream end of the duct. The sensor assembly may include an air pressure sensor, for example a Venturi tube, or a temperature sensor, for example a thermistor. The duct may comprise a curve upstream of the sensor assembly or a straight portion equal in length to at least seven times the diameter of the air inlet duct. Preferably the control component comprises a housing 41, formed from one or more cast components, having a platform 37 for mounting the sensor assembly thereon. The location of the sensor assembly avoids the need for dedicated calibration and reduces the disparity between the measured air temperature and the actual temperature of the air entering the engine. |
