摘要 377,799. Milling helical surfaces. HADDAN, R., 31, Bedford Street, Strand, London.-(Ross Gear & Tool Co. ; Lafayette, Indiana, U.S.A.) July 6, 1931, No. 19453. [Class 83 (iii).] In a stationary-cutter milling-machine for cutting spirally grooved cams, such as are used in the Ross steering gears as described in Specification 234,584, [Class 79 (v), Motor vehicles &c., Steering &c.], the blank to be out is supported on a table and is rotated during cutting whilst the table is given an arcuate movement by means of a reciprocating master cam. The work B is supported between centres on a table 2, the tailstock spindle 3y being adjustable in known manner by a handlever 3z and the headstock spindle 3a being driven by a worm wheel 3c from a worm shaft 3e. Driving machine spindle; reversing- mechanism.-The shaft 3e is connected by a universally jointed shaft 3m to a spindle 7, Fig. 3, rotatable in opposite directions at different speeds. A pulley 10b, Fig. 1, is driven by a belt and rotates a shaft 10 carrying a worm 10a, Fig. 3, driving a worm-wheel 7b connected to a spur pinion 7a and a bevel pinion 7c. The pinion 7a drives a gear 9 through change gears 9i, and reduction gears 9c whilst the bevel pinion 7c drives a bevel gear 7e in the opposite direction to the gear 9 and at an increased speed through bevel pinions 7f rotatably mounted on a boss 1o of the gear casing 1c. A clutch 8, splined to the spindle 7, provides for connecting either of the gears 7e, 9 to the 'spindle. ' A bevel gear 10c on the shaft 10 drives the vertical cutter spindle 11 through a splined bevel gear 11c. Spindles; gauging-devices.-The cutterspindle 11 is journalled by end bearings 11a in an axially slidable sleeve 12 supported in brackets 1i, 1d, on the vertical bridge 1b of the machine. A hand-wheel 13e rotates, through worm gearing 13d, a pinion 13a engaging a rack on the sleeve 12, a graduated collar 13f on the hand-wheel shaft facilitating the adjustment. After the initial adjustment a collar 12s is tightened on the sleeve 12 and by contacting with the top of the bracket 1d serves to ensure the return of the cutter C to the same vertical position after withdrawal. The spindle is locked in the adjusted position by a hand-lever 14a and a screw-operated gripping sleeve 14. Work-table feeds.-The shaft 3e carries a helical gear 3f which rotates a feed screw 4 through a helical gear 3g and change wheels 3k. A nut 4b engages the screw 4 and is attached to a slide 4c carrying the master cam 4e. A roller 5a engaging the cam is mounted on a slide 5 carrying a rack 5b, Fig. 2, which meshes with pinions 6 located beneath the work-table 2. Pins 6b projecting below the pinions are journalled in a plate secured in a slot in the machine frame 1a and pins 6a projecting above the pinions are pivoted in a plate secured in a longitudinal groove in the underside of the table 2, the distance between the pins 6a, 6b being equal to the crank radius of the steering gear to be produced. Rotation of the screw 4 thus causes the table 2 to execute a coupling- rod motion. A weight 5w, attached to a bracket 2y forming an extension of the table 2, and carrying the screw 4, gearing 3k,&c., serves to take up backlash in the linkage and maintains the roller 5a in contact with the cam 4e. The rack 5b is adjusted by a tapered jib engaging its plane side. A reverse cam 4g may be provided to return the table 2 and need not be of the same shape as the master cam 4e. Operation ; Automatic-stop feed motions.- A blank B being placed between the centres 3a, 3y, the cutter spindle is lowered by the hand wheel 13c to cause the cutter C to enter a radial hole previously drilled'in the work. The elutch 8 is then engaged with the gear 9 by means of a yoke-operating shaft 8d and a hand lever 8e, whereupon the blank is slowly rotated and is simultaneously given the coupling-rod movement relatively to the stationary cutter to cut the desired variable-pitch helix. When the work-table 2 reaches the limit of its movement to the right in Figs. 1 and 2 a dog 8l on a collar 3s attached to the headstock spindle 3a engages a lever 8k attached to a rock-shaft 8i and connected by a link 8g to the clutch-operating shaft 8d, thereby throwing the clutch into neutral and stopping the rotation and translation of the work. The clutch is next engaged by hand with the bevel gear 7e, causing the' table 2 to be returned rapidly to its original position, on arrival at which, the clutch is again thrown into neutral by a second dog 8m on a collar 3t attached to the headstock spindle. The shape of the cam may be varied by alteration of the change-speed gearing or by variation of the master cam 4e. Framings and supports.-The bed-plate 1 of the machine supports the base 1a on which the bridge-shaped column 1b is mounted. Flywheels, applications of.-A flywheel 11w is provided on the cutter-spindle 11 to eliminate vibration and maintain an even cutter speed. Lathe and like drivers.-The work B is provided with recesses for engaging the centres 3a, 3y, Fig. 2, the former recess having an offset slot therein for engaging a driving key 3b on the side of the headstock centre 3a.
