A disk rotary valve assembly having a disk rotary valve 1 mounted rotatably in a cylinder head 5 of a reciprocating positive displacement machine, and having two oppositely arranged fronts 8, the periphery of which is associated in use with a corresponding lip 13 adjacent to the chamber ports 12 of the machine, forming a gas-tight seal. The arrangement of the fronts 8 and the lips 13 results in the force that is applied as a result of processes within the chamber being applied equally and oppositely on the fronts 8, with a relatively small proportion of the force being applied radially on the valve assembly. This arrangement allows for less wear on the bearings of the valve, and also reduces the possibility of radial movement or misalignment of the valve. The disk rotary valve and its axis may be displaceable to produce a variable intake and exhaust valve overlap i.e. variable valve timing, by moving the valve 1 relative to the cylinder head 5 and the lips 13. The fronts 8 of the disk rotary valve 1 may be conical surfaces. |
