<p>A device for ventilating a burning building comprising a chassis 2; and cutting assembly 3, mounted on the chassis. The cutting assembly is adapted to cut a ventilation hole in a roof or wall member of a building either autonomously or under remote control by an operator to allow smoke or hot gases to escape through the roof. The cutting assembly comprises a cutter 10 that may be moved from a first to a second orientation relative to the chassis. The cutting assembly may be hingedly connected to the chassis (figure 6A) to rotate about an axis parallel to the roof surface from a first position substantially within the footprint of the chassis to a second position outside of the chassis footprint. The chassis may comprise surface engaging means comprising a continuous tread that may consist of magnetic or high-friction elements (26, 27; figure 28). A means (23; figure 5B) for retaining portions of the roof cut free by the device may be included. A method of ventilating a building using the device is also disclosed.</p> |
