A method to identify the wavelength of incoming light is disclosed. The method includes steps to measure a first photocurrent by setting the avalanche photodiode (APD) in a photodiode (PD) mode and a second photocurrent by setting the APD in the APD mode, and to compare a ratio of the two photocurrents with prepared references.

1. A method to identify a wavelength of incoming light, comprising steps of:
receiving the incoming light by an avalanche photodiode (APD) so as to generate a first photocurrent in a photodiode (PD) mode where the APD shows a multiplication factor of unity; receiving the incoming light by the APD so as to generate a second photocurrent in an APD mode where the APD shows a multiplication factor greater than the unity; calculating a ratio of the second photocurrent against the first photocurrent; and comparing the ratio with a pre-measured value to identify the wavelength of the incoming light.
