Adherent cells from placenta and use of same in disease treatment

Methods for treating conditions by administration of placenta derived adherent stromal cells to a subject in thereof are provided. Such conditions include skeletal muscle defects, neuropathic pain, and myocardial infarction. Also provided are methods wherein the adherent stromal cells administered are cultured under 2 dimensional or 3 dimensional growth conditions. Also provided are methods in which the cells administered are at least 70% adherent cells from a maternal or fetal portion of the placenta.

1. A composition comprising:
(a) a population of adherent cells isolated from a placenta, cultured under three-dimensional culturing conditions promoting cell expansion, and harvested from said three-dimensional culturing conditions, wherein the population comprises at least 70% adherent cells from a maternal portion of the placenta, wherein the maternal portion of the placenta is either or both of decidua basalis or decidua parietalis, and wherein the adherent cells do not differentiate into osteogenic or adipogenic lineages when subjected to the same differentiation-inducing conditions as cells derived from bone marrow that differentiate into said lineages; and (b) an artificial freezing mixture in an amount effective for cryopreservation and subsequent thawing of viable adherent cells.
